Post subject: benefit of deleting index.dat files?
PostPosted: Wed Jul 30, 2008 8:54 am
i really dont want to ask questions, but will it be a benefit to delete index.dat files? or will they be overwritten anyway? because as of i know they are there to make regurarly visited sites to show up faster. why dont microsoft want them to be deleted? will also the temporary internet files be overwritten when it is full? because if that is true, then there is no point for me to delete them other than deleting persistent cookies and maybe flash and java files on the computer. adobe should have placed the flash controlpanel on the computer to avoid navigating their confusing sites to find the flash controlpanel, i dont find it all the times. there is somethings called flash cookies also i think i have heard, so disabling cookies doesnt help if adservers use flash ads. i delete temporary files once a week, and scans the computer with antivirus and antimalware and updates the programs i have the same day (antivirus is updated everyday). maybe it is too often to delete temporary files every week.

index.dat files are never cleared/deleted by Windows - they just grow ... and grow ....

As far as the benefits of getting rid of them, the fact they grow to astronomical sizes is but one reason, the second being privacy and contrary to their reason for being there, once they get to larger sizes, they tend to slow down browsing and cause problems, rather than speeding it up.

I wrote an article on this a few years ago that you may want to read?

The truth about the index.dat files: What, why and where?

IE options + index.dat files... really?

If CCleaner and Spybot are doing the job deleting the index.dat file for you, you don't need IDS unless you want to actually view the files Smile (though feel free to try it anyway if you want to of course Wink).
