Hello. Smile

TeMerc made me aware of this site at Windows BBS. Thanks, TeMerc and Steven!

While doing a little research I ("mailman") described in a thread at Windows BBS, I discovered a couple strange bits of whois information in hpHosts Online database lookups.

I looked up information about why ask.com is in the hpHosts/hpguru's HOSTS file (http://hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk/default.asp?s=ask.com) and noticed the whois information for ask.com had contact references to email addresses at askjeeves.com.

Therefore, I looked up askjeeves.com in hpHosts Online and found the following information in the whois section.

http://hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk/default.asp?s=askjeeves.com (not in the hpHosts database)
Quote:
ASKJEEVES.COM.ZZZZZ.GET.LAID.AT.WWW.SWINGINGCOMMUNITY.COM
ASKJEEVES.COM

Then I looked up SWINGINGCOMMUNITY.COM in hpHosts Online and found the following information in the whois section.

http://hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk/default.asp?s=SWINGINGCOMMUNITY.COM (not in the hpHosts database)
Quote:
SWINGINGCOMMUNITY.COM.ZZZZZ.STOP.SPAMMING.WHOIS.ITS.REALLY.ANNOYING.WEBFURY.COM
SWINGINGCOMMUNITY.COM

I did not go any further by checking out what hpHosts Online says about webfury.com Wink

What's up with the whois queries? Are the people who are in charge of the whois servers aware that people seem (to me anyway) to be hacking them?

Alas this has unfortunately been a problem for a while;

http://www.msblog.org/2007/04/11/has-mi ... en-hacked/

This only seems to affect internic.net, and I've implemented a modification so that results such as those, are redirected to WhoIs servers that return the correct information.

In the meantime, as an FYI, the URL you are using (hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk) is the old backup URL, the new (and main) URL is hosts-file.net .....;

http://hosts-file.net/?s=ask.com

... and welcome to hpHosts Smile

Thanks for your explanation and the blog link. Smile Seems Internic would have fixed the problem in a year unless the hack was so severe that Internic hasn't finished repairing all the hacked entries or something like that.

Thanks for your prompt to use the hosts-file.net domain. I read about the changeover last night in one of the other threads here. I will make the switch. Smile
